Applying Inclusive and Equitable Teaching Practices

3 graduate credits through Vermont State University

Education Justice Coalition of Vermont

The Education Organizing Committee is excited to host a class supporting educators to shift their practices to build on and move towards the updated Inclusive Education Quality Standards. We are excited to share that the updated Education Quality Standards passed the initial phase at the state board earlier this summer and now is the time to move towards implementation. This class is a facilitated, hybrid learning opportunity to dig into the teaching practices introduced in this toolkit. As part of this project we are offering a free book, BIPOC stipends, optional graduate credit, and an in person celebration of learning. Check out the syllabus to learn about the full class design.

The new Education Quality Standards will help you: center students’ cultural identities and the journey for societal equity, build strong learning environments, and develop supportive learning environments. Throughout this class we will be setting and achieving small goals to make doable and impactful changes in our practice. The registration will be ready soon. If you’re interested in participating please fill out our Class Interest Form and we will be in touch about next steps!

GED 502: Developing Sustainable Practices Toward Equity & Healing in School Systems

3 Credit Graduate Level Course through Saint Michael’s College

Summer 2024

3 week Summer Course

Week 1: online (asynchronous): July 8th-July 12th

Week 2: in-person with zoom hybrid option: July 15th-July 19th

Week 3: online (integration week): July 22nd-July 26th

The purpose of this course is to challenge both you and to expand your awareness of how systems of oppression operate within you, schools, and the broader society in order to be more equipped to disrupt harm at all levels. Creating the conditions for students and educators to thrive requires both self and system reflection. Youth of color, disabled youth, queer and trans youth have been persistently and consistently harmed and made invisible by systems of oppression. We cannot change systems if we are not aware of how we uphold practices, patterns, and habits that perpetuate harm.

In this course, participants will engage in contemplative practices, small group discussions, and will develop a plan of action to bring with them after the course is over. Daily mindfulness and/or contemplative practices and a slow pedagogical pace are core components of this course. We will also explore the origins of mindfulness and restorative practices.

The first week of the course is entirely online with no zoom meetings. You will receive a link with a checklist of daily readings, videos, practices. The second week of class is in-person from 9-3 each day. A zoom option will be available as well. The third week is designed to be an integration week to allow you time and space to integrate your learning into an actionable plan which is also the end-of-the-course project.
